Reading:

For this week: Finish Chapter 9 and start the Chemistry of Vision

A look ahead: Prelim on December 2

Homework problems:

Chapter 9: 9.2, 9.9, 9.11, 9.13, 9.16, 9.19, 9.25, 9.29, 9.32, 9.34

9.39, 9.41, 9.42, 9.45, 9.47, 9.51, 9.69

Questions in Handout

Key concepts and equations:

--orbital overlap in covalent bonding of diatomics: understand the difference between s (sigma) and p (pi) bonds

--hybridization (electron promotion and orbital mixing): understand how the valence of Carbon = 4 and not 2

--multiple bonds: how do s and p bonds both exist between a single pair of atoms?

--molecular orbitals for diatomics: understand the separated atom (SA) limit and the molecular limit; know how to calculate a bond order

bond order = (#bonding electrons - #antibonding electrons)/2

--construct molecular orbitals from hybridized atomic orbitals: ethylene!

--paramagnetism of O2
