Java Viewers

The Protein DataBank has dropped the use of the browser add-in Chime for inline (that is, within a web page) visualization of structures. Instead, live views are generated by one of three Java-based applications: JMol, WebMol, or KiNG.

In order to use one of these viewers within the PDB web pages, you will need to have the Java runtime environment installed on your computer. Newer computers, or those running Internet Explorer 7 will have the JRE by default. If you try to take one of the above viewing options on a PDB page and get no result, you will need to download the JRE by taking this link. The file you want is J2SEv1.4.2_13.

With JRE installed, you may also download the three viewers to run as stand-alone applications on your PC.

JMol WebMol KiNG

None of these viewers are necessary for this course. You can simply download the pdb files and view them with Rasmol, PyMol, or Swiss PDB Viewer. They are, however, interesting to play with, and give you the opportunity to explore structures directly on line.
