Umaine chemistry alumnus D. Allan Butterfield will receive an honorary doctorate from his Alma Mater at the Spring commencement, Saturday, 18 May.

Butterfield, who was born in Brownsville, ME, received a B.A. in chemistry from the University of Maine in 1968, and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Duke University in 1974. He joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky in 1975, and became a professor there in 1983. Since 1987, he has also served as director of the University of Kentucky Center of Membrane Sciences.
His research focuses on free-radical oxidative stress in the brain as related to aging and age-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Butterfield has published more than 240 papers and has edited two books.
He will give a seminar on his work with the b-amyloid protein associated with Alzheimer's on Friday, 17 May, at 1 PM in the Soderberg Lecture Theater in Jenness Hall.

Recently, Butterfield received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, which recognizes outstanding efforts by individuals and organizations to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in science. The award includes a $10,000 grant to be used in support of the mentoring activities.
