Where is the University of Maine?

The state of Maine, only 39th largest in the country, is nonetheless as big as all the rest of New England combined. The largest county, Aroostook, known to Mainers (or, Mainiacs) simply as "The County", is larger than the entire state of Connecticut. More than 90% of the state is forested, and a large fraction has so few residents that no local government exists; it is managed directly by the state legislature.

The University is located in the small town of Orono, just off Interstate 95, about 10 miles northeast of Bangor. (Incidentally, with a population of 34,000, Bangor is Maine's third largest city.)

The University, and portions of Orono and neighboring Old Town, occupy an island in the Penobscot River. Here's the campus, in an image from Google Earth.

Aubert Hall, the chemistry building, is marked, facing onto the green, tree-lined mall. Aubert is one of the older building on campus, having been constructed originally in 1914 (and fortunately, modified many times since).
