News of our Graduates


1968 B.S. graduate Allan Butterfield was awarded an honorary doctorate at UMaine's 2002 Commencement, on Saturday 18 May.


Mohammad A. Omary who received his PhD in 1997 working with Prof. Howard Patterson, has received an NSF Young Investigator Award to support his research at the University of North Texas. UNT is the 4th largest university in Texas with 28,000 students; the Chemistry Department has about 20 faculty members.


Christie Larochelle ,a PhD Physics graduate student now studying with Howard Patterson, received her PhD in August, 2001. She accepted a tenure-track faculty position in the Physics Department at Dickinson College in Carlisle,Penn starting in September.


May 2000 Ph.D. graduate S. Koneshan, who worked here with Professor Jay Rasaiah, was featured recently in the Cornell Chronicle. He is doing post-doctoral research at Cornell in computational biology.

Sami D. Al-Obaid, who graduated with a B.S. Chemistry in May 1997, writes that he was hired by the Saudi Arabian Oil Company, Saudi Aramco. After working as Analytical Chemist in the Companys R&DC, he went for a rotation assignment in different areas of the company for two years. After his return he has decided to work as Intellectual Property Specialist guarding the Company's Intellectual Assets, and will pursue my Masters in Intellectual Property.
