1. Acquire and post the SOG and color coding charts provided by the Department.
2. For procedures that are unique to your laboratory, develop and put in writing
: (a) emergency protocols; (b) standard operating guidelines; and (c) special cleanup procedures. These documents may either be posted prominently or go in the safety notebook with the Department plan.3. Sort the chemicals stored in your laboratory into the appropriate hazard categories and color code their labels. Get rid of chemicals not recently used. Color code appropriate storage cabinets and shelves, and distribute the chemicals into their proper locations. Post the color code charts near the chemical storage area. Make sure you have appropriate secondary containment for liquids.
4. Collect MSDS for all chemicals stored or commonly used in your laboratory. Place them in a notebook in alphabetical order and shelve it with the Hygiene Plan. Visit at least one MSDS Web site and make sure you know how to find new MSDS.
5. Put together a spill kit. Absorbent and buckets now are available in the stockroom. If you have a spill kit containing vermiculite, either replace the vermiculite, or add a second spill kit containing kitty litter. Obtain Spill Kit labels from Cindy, and attach them to kits.
6. Make sure appropriate PPE is available: goggles, gloves, and lab coats or aprons that will fit everyone who uses the lab; a face shield, and a reaction shield.
7. If one does not already exist in your laboratory, create a map indicating the location of the emergency exit for your laboratory. Post it prominently near the laboratory door.
8. Check your waste collection system. Make sure containers are properly labeled. If they are in a hood, place them in a plastic tub and label the hood "For Storage Only". Make sure all documentation (list of contents, inspection forms) for your waste accumulation site is in order and easily accessible to inspectors.
9. Print out an inspection sheet from the Safety Web Page and conduct an inspection of your laboratory. Repeat the inspection monthly.
