The Cole-Fort Group: (down the table from the left) me: Barbara's son, Avery; her husband, Tim; our instrument technician, Johnna Brazier; MS candidate Venkata Makkena; LeRae Graham, PhD candidate: Vi Nguyen, second-year chem major; PhD candidate Mai Nguyen; Jenn Quimby, senior (now a PhD candidate at BC); Maja; Barbara; and Barbara's daughter, Hannah

(Since the pictures above were taken, we have been joined by Renee' Whippie and Jodi Wyman, juniors; and Satyavan Singh, MS candidate.)

I came to the University of Maine in 1985, after 20 years at Kent State University. Following two terms as Department Chair of Chemistry, I spent the 1991-1992 academic year on sabbatical at the University of Washington, working with Wes Borden. Wes and his Research Associate Dave Hrovat taught me a lot about doing MO calculations, which now form one focus of my research.

Since returning from sabbatical, I have developed a strong and rewarding collaboration with Professor Barbara Cole. Our joint research group is working on a number of important problems in wood and paper chemistry. I also have developed an interest in modeling biomolecules, such as the Alzheimer's amyloid protein.
