OWL Assignment for Week 7:

Our second Chapter 4 assignment (called Ch 5 in OWL) redox, acid-base, titration: due October 21, 2007

Key concepts and equations:

Chapter 4 material

oxidation and reduction reactions always occur together

activity series for oxidation of metals

solution stoichiometry

quantitative calculations with molarity

titration

equivalence point

indicators

Chapter 5 material

energy, work, and heat

system, surroundings, universe (or system + surroundings = universe)

walls and their properties (see handout)

internal energy change, E

exothermic and endothermic processes

state function or function of the state of the system

heat absorbed by system, q

work done on system, w; w= -PV

process variables govern the history of the system

First Law of Thermodynamics, E = q + w or E = q - PV

qV is the heat absorbed at constant volume, E = qV since V = 0 at constant volume

enthalpy change, H, is the change in a function of state

H is defined as (E + PV)

qP is the heat absorbed at constant pressure, H = qP

enthalpy of reaction, Hrxn = H(products) - H(reactants)
